Jack's 1st Birthday Carnival

Well, I'm officially back from my hiatus. Yes, I took a break from blogging to enjoy my lil' man and he has done plenty to keep me on my toes. We just celebrated Jack's first birthday and it seems like this first year flew by. It has been amazing to watch him develop into this funny, outgoing and creative little guy. He really makes me laugh daily and I wanted to share some of the fun birthday details.

First of all, I have to admit that I rolled my eyes at friends and family that went overboard on their children's first birthday parties. I used to think that it was so silly because the kid won't even remember it. Well, I admit that I totally became THAT mom. There is something about the first party that makes you want to go ALL OUT! For me, I wanted to make it extra special so that it would reflect in the pictures that I show Jack someday. I want those pictures to show the love that I put into the party. Plus, it is kind of a celebration of making through the first year of parenthood too. I only invited family and friends who are like family, so it wasn't a huge party. However, the love was in the details.

I try to be crafty and everyone knows my addiction the Pinterest. Every time I thought I was finished with decorations, I would see something else on Pinterest that I had to add to the party. Thank goodness for Oriental Trading Company and Etsy, plus a few crafty projects...I ended up not spending too much. I also saved by making the food, cake and cupcakes. My only real splurge was the tray of Chick-Fil-A nuggets, which were my hubby's request and my awesome photographer.

The photographer caused a bit of a discussion with the hubby, but I justified hiring her by not having a 1-year photography session. Plus, how often do you have all your loved ones in one place!?! We had some great moments with Jack and his great grandparents, grandparents and other family members that I wanted to capture. The photographer was worth every penny! Thank you Jordan from JJM Photography and Above and Beyond Events!

I wanted a vintage carnival feel and used a lot of burlap, galvanized buckets, twine and straw hay. One of my favorite creations was the burlap ribbon table runner. I am no sewing expert, so a little fabric glue worked just fine. I also made the fireplace centerpiece using a large canvas and covered it in the polka dot fabric. I really enjoyed making the "Jack's First Year" frame too. This was so easy! Using foam board covered in burlap, ribbon, mini clothes pins and a painted frame. This was such a special project...everything was special about this day. I hope you enjoy a little peek into Jack's 1st Carnival!

Sunday Brunch

For my three followers, sorry it has been so long since my last post. Managing a blog with a baby is more difficult as he becomes more mobile. I have also been busy planning Jack's baptism brunch. We were blessed to have fifteen family members celebrate this special day with us. It was also Father's Day, so I wanted to make the brunch extra special for our fathers too.
This was the first time in our home that we have hosted so many people and finding space for four tables was a little tricky. The weather in Texas never cooperates, so all the tables had to be inside. However, it all worked out just fine and I believe everyone enjoyed themselves...especially our little Jack. He was eating up all of the attention.

I wanted the menu to be a typical Sunday brunch and enjoyed trying some new twists on old recipes. The menu included:

Assorted Vegetable Tray with Spinach dip and Garlic dip
Berry Delightful Spinach Salad with a homemade Strawberry Vinaigrette
Egg & Sausage Breakfast Casserole
Chicken Salad Croissants
Ham & Swiss Sliders
Potato Salad
Banana Nut Bread
Lemon Poppy Seed Bread
Cranberry Nut Bread
Southern Coconut Cake
Banana Pudding
Lemonade
Summertime Sweet Tea

Here are just a few of the recipes I used...

Using an everyday tray, I used yellow bell peppers for my dip bowls and layered on the fresh vegetables.

Another love of mine is creating tablescapes, especially floral arrangements. It is like therapy for me. I ended up buying only $15.00 worth of flowers at Costco and cutting some flowers from my garden to create three different centerpieces. By incorporating lemons in my arrangements, I saved money as well.

Thanks for stopping by...there will be more pictures to come!
